Protein is essential to living a healthy life. So, why aren’t adults consuming enough?

Busy schedules can undoubtedly get in the way of our own self-care. As our children, spouses, and even parents get older, we can become so enthralled with being available for everyone else and meeting everyone else’s needs that we oftentimes neglect our own.

This is especially true when it comes to nutrition. Eating healthy at home and on-the-go can seem impossible with the pressure, commitments, and stress that can ensue all day long. It’s so easy to believe that ‘food equals proper nutrients – no matter how general.’ I know this for a fact because I had the same mindset. It wasn’t until I came across a research study on the ins and outs of protein and the recommended amount for adults, that I changed my perspective.

Numbers Don’t Lie: The Latest Finding on Protein in Adults

Did you know that many nutrition experts recommend 25 to 30 grams of protein at every meal for optimal daily nutrition? Yet, more than 1 in 3 adults over 50 still aren’t getting the protein they need daily, according to new National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from researchers at Abbott and the Ohio State University.

Protein has a plethora of benefits. It helps to maintain and rebuild muscle mass as we get older. It aids in satisfying hunger, which helps us to avoid unhealthy eating habits. Protein is a vital key to healthy hair, skin, nails, and even bones. It’s also auspicious to weight management and to healthy metabolism.

With so many benefits, it doesn’t make sense that adults aren’t getting the amount that they need – including myself. Learning more about protein and understanding its value was a huge eye-opener to me. It inspired me to get a better understanding of my own unique protein needs.

Looking in the Mirror: Evaluating My Own Relationship with Protein

As I mentioned before, research shows the importance of high-quality proteins (that provide all nine essential amino acids) in the adult diet to help support overall health, especially with age.

While I knew that protein was essential, I was totally unaware of the increased recommendations of protein in older adults. Now that I am nearing 45 years old, I had to sit down and reevaluate my self-care needs, my daily diet, and all the ways that I was missing out on protein.

It is oftentimes challenging for me to get the proper amount of protein in my meals because I am always on-the-go. From driving my kids to and from school, to running household errands, to long to-do lists, most days are nonstop with little-to-no breaks in between. While mason jar salads with almonds are quick and easy meals, they do not always supply the 25-30 grams of protein that’s recommended for a healthy lifestyle.

In addition to healthy snacks, I usually keep a bottle of Ensure in my bag. Not because I ever looked at the nutrition label – it was simply because it’s what my mother did.

Channeling Tradition to Incorporate Protein

For as far back as I can remember, my mom never left the house without taking a can of Ensure with her (back in those days, Ensure was packaged in cans). Her favorite flavors were vanilla, strawberry, and butter pecan. Although I didn’t know exactly what Ensure was, I always begged her for a taste!

As I got older, I learned about the nutritional value of Ensure, and began buying my own cases of it in my teenage years. I was an athlete and Ensure was always great to have on hand after a long sports practice or strenuous game. I continued drinking Ensure throughout college and into adulthood; through the births of my four children and up until recently when I discovered Abbott’s newest nutrition drink, Ensure Max Protein .

Why I Made the Switch from Ensure Original to Ensure Max Protein

I am quickly approaching 45 years old, and I’ve noticed changes in my body in the past few years. I feel like I am always hungry, and it takes much more for me to get energized these days. In fact, I realized that it was becoming increasingly difficult to stay energized with each passing year. My focus levels are all over the place! Most days I just could not seem to get it together. Initially, I did not know what was the matter with me.

It took some time (due to my stubbornness), but I finally started to face the fact that I could no longer run from the obvious: my body is changing – and my protein needs are changing with it.

That’s what made me look for a better protein solution. While Ensure Original contains 9 grams of protein, the new Ensure Max Protein has 30 grams of high-quality protein in every bottle. This is perfect for my evolved nutritional needs and helps me make sure I’m getting the right amount of protein!

In addition to 30 grams of high-quality protein, Ensure Max Protein also includes:

  • All nine essential amino acids
  • 1 gram of sugar, 1.5 grams of fat and 150 calories
  • 22 vitamins and minerals, including antioxidant vitamins C and E to support normal immune function, and calcium and vitamin D for strong bones

With more protein, fewer calories, and less sugar, Ensure Max Protein helps me know I’m nourishing my body, so it can operate at its best. Not only is it designed to help refuel my body, it tastes great, too! Ensure Max Protein comes in two delicious flavors, including Milk Chocolate and Café Mocha. I love that the Café Mocha flavor includes 100 milligrams of caffeine from Colombian coffee extract, which is as much as one cup of coffee. For me, that means enjoying my ‘a.m. caffeine’ without the excess sugar I usually add to my coffee cup, thus making my life even healthier!

Thanks to Ensure Max Protein, I can have confidence that my body is getting the right amount of protein it needs. Additionally, keeping Ensure Max Protein in my bag to drink throughout the day helps me to maintain the strength and energy needed to successfully tackle my most demanding days and evenings, all while keeping hunger at bay and my focus sharp.

I’ll tell anyone that using Ensure Max Protein to supplement my diet and exercise regimen is essential to helping me live a stronger, healthier life. It’s the right amount of protein for my age and lifestyle, perfecting my protein habits every day!
