How Sleep Deprivation Can Make You Suck At Everything

Hi: I am MELISASource – presiding president of Team No Sleep.

I am also functioning at less than half of my capacity, cranky, and looking a hot mess by the eyes. This is something I am certainly not happy about (adding to that ‘cranky’ thing).

 .

So, what gives you say? It can be summed up in two words: sleep deprivation.

 .sleep deprivation.

I openly admit that I have a very bad habit of staying up all night and day to get things done. Although it is true that I usually complete what’s on my agenda and I totally love that feeling of accomplishment, I always end up paying the hefty price of staying awake later on down the line.

 .sleep deprivation.

In other words, whenever I go days on end with either no sleep or very little sleep (1-3 hours), I start to suck at everything. Then I become emotional at the fact that I cannot focus or complete even the simplest of tasks correctly, only to go on a warpath of rage with anyone who just so happens to be around—on or offline. My thoughts seem extremely garbled. No matter how hard I try, I just can’t get it together.

 .sleep deprivation.

This, my friends is definitely no bueno.

Using the often-spoken phrase of my 2 teenagers: “It sucks to suck.”

.

There are only 24 hours in a day. And I am one-person show with a boatload of things to do daily. Yet I’m seeing everyone else get project after project done, so they must be staying awake hours on end too, right??

.sleep deprivation.

Right??? (????)

The problem is see that and I take on the Supergirl complex, and my mind begins to play tricks on me that if I forgo sleep, then I can beat my chest and wear my “S” cape proudly. However the result is me not being Supergirl at all—only super-drained.

.

.

Using motivation of accomplishment for good—not evil

I’ve shared a little bit before about the benefits of sleep, and I’ve also seen firsthand both the wellness and health effects of sleep deprivation with others. I even know of people who’ve had a heart attack and died because of improper rest. It’s not a place that I want to be—at all. My walking around feeling crazy and in a sleepless daze certainly doesn’t do me, those around me, nor my roles and responsibilities any good.

.sleep deprivation.

Rome was not built in a day, and there are always things that can wait until the next day: the earth won’t fall apart if they do. Maybe it’s about time that I officially resign from my presidency of Team No Sleep and commit myself to the “6 to 8” club. It would definitely be a step in the right direction on the path to do everything better.

I tend to sleep 8 to 12 hours depending on my pain levels. Sometimes, I don’t get enough deep sleep and end up exhausted no matter how long I slept.

oh Honey, you’ve got to take better care of yourself. I’m Queen of the Insomnia Kingdom. I’ve been an insomniac since I’m 15. I have no problem falling asleep, but I am awake at 3 am . it’s AWFUL. This is not something I can control, although I’m trying hard. After 30 years of it, it’s taking it’s toll on my mental stability, which was wonky anyway. Listen to your body and GO TO BED. STuff will get done. If it doesn’t then it doesnt. the kids won’t care in the long run if their mama is gone or extra… Read more »

You’re not alone. I to find myself in a similar situation. I am working on it though. I have been trying to shut everything off by a certain time, whether it has all gotten done or not. I’ve been feeling like a zombie and I don’t like it. I also know that I’m doing too much, which also seems to be the case. I think we have to stop comparing all that we’re accomplishing on a daily basis to what others are doing. While it seems like everyone is completing projects left and right, do we really know how long they… Read more »
