Watch Out: Salt Is Sneaking Its Way Into Your Diet

Think that you have put the salt out of your diet for good? You may want to think again. Salt is sneaking into our diet — and too much salt is not good for our health.

Even if you’re like me and prepare foods with very little or no salt and never reach for the salt shaker while dining out, chances are that you are still probably consuming too much sodium. In fact, Americans eat more than 3,400 milligrams of sodium, on average, daily—more than double the amount that the American Heart Association recommends for ideal heart health.

More than 75 percent of the sodium we eat is added to processed, prepackaged, and restaurant foods before we buy them. Surprising, huh?! High sodium consumption can contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, and there are other health affects as well:

So, what can we do about sneaky salt in our diets? First and foremost, ask. Be informed. Anytime you’re dining out, ask the server about the amount of sodium in the meals. Also ask if there’s a separate menu for low-sodium meal options. When you’re shopping for foods to prepare at home, read every label to check for sodium amounts. Choose fresh foods over canned, packaged, or otherwise processed foods as much as possible. These steps may seem very simple, but they can play a huge part in living a healthier lifestyle and saving your life.
