Interview: Rev Run And Daughter Vanessa Simmons Urge Women To Get Screened For Diabetes
Women who are planning pregnancy should know their risk for diabetes before trying to conceive. If left untreated, diabetes can affect a mother’s whole body, including her unborn baby, and can lead to a host of complications.
That is why hip hop legend Rev Run and his daughter, new mom Vanessa Simmons, have partnered with Novo Nordisk and its Ask.Screen.Know.TM initiative. The campaign is a national education program that challenges Americans to find out about their risk of type 2 diabetes and raise awareness of the need for early screening.
Vanessa’s father Rev Run has been passionate about spreading the important message of knowing your diabetes risk because he is at-risk, and has since made health a priority for his entire family. Because of his continued involvement in Ask.Screen.Know. TM, Vanessa learned how important it is to be screened for diabetes.
At first, she didn’t realize that she needed to be screened for diabetes before becoming pregnant. Now Vanessa wants to encourage other women who are thinking of having a baby to take the Diabetes Risk Factor Assessment at AskScreenKnow.com, and learn their risk factors of type 2 diabetes before becoming pregnant.
Rev Run and his daughter Vanessa Simmons joined me recently to discuss more about their personal journey that lead to diabetes screening, and why they encourage others to do the same. The two also shared the importance of knowing your risks and ways to help the whole family stay healthy, especially women who are thinking of becoming mothers. Take a look below.
