Preventing Dehydration In Winter

Did you know that staying hydrated during the winter months is just as important as it is during the summer? It tends to be easier to drink water when it is hot outside, but it is a fact that hot drinks such as tea, coffee, and hot cocoa become the beverage of choice for both adults and kids for warming up on cold days. However, forgoing the H2O and being dehydrated in winter can cause serious problems for the body.

Preventing dehydration in winter

The signs and symptoms of dehydration are oftentimes attributed to something else during the winter season. Body ailments such as headaches, fatigue, and dry skin are usually mistaken for things like stress, or braving the bitter winds and temperatures. While those issues may be happening in life as well (we all get stressed and tired sometimes!), the first step to take in getting the body back on track is to drink water—and lots of it.

The easiest thing to do is pay attention to the color of your urine. Pale and clear means you’re well hydrated. Darker urine is a sign of dehydration: you need to drink more fluids.

You may be thinking, “Well during the winter months, I drink water when I feel thirsty.” However, if you and your family enjoys drinking coffee, tea, and other hot beverages throughout the day when it is cold outside, there is a chance that you won’t ‘feel’ thirsty at all. In fact, thirst is not the best indicator that you need to drink. If you start to feel thirsty, it is too late: you are already dehydrated. What’s worse, kids may reach for juices or other sugary drinks when they feel thirsty during the winter, which do not help at all with dehydration.

Fruit juices or sugary drinks can be hard on your stomach when dehydrated.

Preventing dehydration in winter is not only important to do while indoors or out and about running errands. If you and your family love to be outdoors, staying hydrated is a great way to enjoy winter weather without getting sick—especially if your family participates in winter physical activities such as ice skating, sledding, hiking, or even tasks around the house like shoveling snow and snowball fights.

The simplest way to incorporate water into the daily family routine during the winter season is to infuse your daily beverage intake with ready-to-go containers filled with water available in the refrigerator. Place them in lunch boxes or backpacks for easy access when kids are away from home. Buy a container that is small enough to fit inside of your purse or gym bag for when you are on the go.

Another way of preventing dehydration in winter is to make drinking water enjoyable for everyone. Thanks for these great tips. I’ve never thought about being dehydrated in the winter before. Very interesting.

These would help me stay hydrated in a big way. I’m trying to drink a lot more water this year.

I drink lots of water. This looks like a great bottle when I am out and about.

Drip Drops is a great product and it is great because my kids love it! It has a bit of a salty after taste but nothing too noticeable.

I have been using DripDrop after I workout. It tastes great 🙂

My daughter uses Drip Drop as she has a condition that makes her easily dehydrated. She likes it so much better than other hydration drinks she has tried.

Wow I definitely need these during the winter! My hydration sucks during the cold.

I’ve never seen Drip Drop before – I usually use the liquid water flavors, but this is definitely something I’m going to have to check out. Thanks for sharing!

Glad you told me it was at CVS! I definitely could use some extra hydration!

I drink a TON of water on a daily basis. Adding a boost of hydration by using DripDrop would be great!

I actually love my water “straight up”, but I think this is a great idea for those who don’t. It’s so important to stay hydrated!

I’ve been hearing such great things about Drip Drop I need to see if I can find it here. Would love to try it myself!

Ohh, I didn’t know you could get it like this in packages. I’m so guilty of coffees and teas too!

These are great tips,I have not heard of this product before but we always do make sure we drink plenty of water.

I’ve not tried Drip Drop yet, but think it would be great for long runs, too! What a great product!

My daughter will be starting track soon. I think these would be great to keep on hand to make sure she is staying hydrated after those runs!

This is something I am going to have to try, we are huge on not being dehydrated. Winter is tough on your skin.

You’re right, water and lots of it is very important. I’d try the DripDrop. 🙂

I seriously need Drip Drops – I hate the taste of water. Everyone thinks I am dehydrated

I primarily drink water. I try to stay hydrated as much as I can. Especially since right now I have a cold.

thinking the cold is preventing me from staying hydrated. I’ll look into this for me

I drink 1-2 cups of coffee. Not every day though. I do drink a lot of hot tea. Just love it. I also do warm water with lemon since drinking cold water is so hard in Michigan winter. I have a gallon jug by my desk that I try to get through every day.
