Groundbreaking New Treatment Helps Those Suffering With Head and Neck Cancer

While a cancer diagnosis is never easy to hear, a new immuno-oncology treatment option is now available for certain patients with hard-to-treat cancers, including head and neck.

This year alone, more than 64,000 new cases of head and neck cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S., resulting in more than 13,000 deaths. The relative five-year survival rate for metastatic head and neck cancers is less than 38%, according to the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society.

As with any cancer diagnosis, relieving symptoms remains an important part of cancer care and treatment. Dr. Michael Gibson, MD, PhD, FACP, Medical Director of the Head and Neck Team at the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center and Associate Professor of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine joined me to share the latest in treatment for head and neck cancer. Joining him was Carly O’Brien, MSW, OSW-C, LCSW, Caregiver Program Coordinator at CancerCare, who discussed patient care, including support for people coping with cancer as well as those who care for them.
