Mother And Daughter Reading With The Selection Series

One of the things that my daughter Lady T and I have in common is that we both are huge book lovers. We enjoy finding a good book series that we can read together. Not only is it a great way of bonding and communication for us, but it also helps both of us to see life and situations from the other’s perspective.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, we are taking our mother and daughter reading time together outdoors. We decided to start with the book ‘The Selection’ by Kiera Cass. With Lady T now entering into her teenage years, she is venturing into the young adult novels. Even so, I am still very cautious about the types of books that she reads. Because The Selection series provides a light-hearted, romantic alternative to the more intense, dystopian young adult novels/movies (The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, etc.), I knew that it would be the perfect launching pad to her journey into this next level of books.

The Selection series is perfect for mother and daughter reading because, while romantic, there is very little worrisome content. The romantic elements are kept at a sweet, clean stage. I she and I felt very comfortable reading it together – the language, theme, and tones are just right for girls her age.

What I loved most about the book really brings out the idea that you can do anything if you put your mind to it, and also you can learn that it does not matter what people think of you or how they define you – it matters how you think of yourself. With all of the messages that are in the media and even everything that is happening at schools, I felt this was one of the most empowering messages of the book. Lady T and I had lots of open conversation about it as well, and the importance of self-esteem, confidence, and accepting yourself for the unique person you are.

I think that Kiera Cass did a really great job of combining real life situations with just the right amount of fantasy. One of our favorite parts of The Selection is when characters Maxon and America become best friends. To me, it demonstrated how a person should never judge others by what they look like on the outside – another powerful message.

Overall, our mother and daughter reading experience was a fantastic one! The Selection is a great book for all ages. It has the politics and ideas of government for the interest of parents, while also having the ideas of being a princess and prince for teens and tweens. We both found it an extremely entertaining read from beginning to end—so much so that the next books in the series: The Elite, The One, and The Heir (launching on May 5, 2015) are our reads of choice for the next few months for fun mother and daughter summer reading.

I’m so grateful that my daughters somehow got the zest for reading too! I can’t wait til they get a little bit older and we can exchange books and read together!

What a great way to bond together. It is awesome that you are to a point where you both share that common interest.

It’s great that you and your daughter can both enjoy the same book together!

Rosey

Love that you’re both big readers! My daughter likes to read once in awhile, but nothing like her voracious reader of a mom. 😉
