Moms And Low Blood Calcium: Facts You Need To Know

Do you find yourself feeling extremely anxious, tired, or sad often? Do you get spasms or have trouble concentrating during the day? You may be suffering from low blood calcium.

Proper regulation of calcium in the body is essential to good health. Hypoparathyroidism is a condition that affects about 50,000 people in the U.S. It is a hormone disorder that leaves patients without enough of something called parathyroid hormone or PTH. Without PTH, people cannot regulate the amounts of calcium (and phosphorus) in their blood.

Recent research shows that a vast majority of people living with Hypoparathyroidism struggle with more than 10 symptoms, including hand and feet spasms, muscle cramping, fatigue, numbness, anxiety and depression. These symptoms can have a huge impact on daily activities, especially for moms. While large doses of calcium and vitamin D can help with the symptoms, taking such large doses has serious long-term risks.

In a recent phone interview, Dr. Michael Levine, an endocrinologist at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a leading expert in Hypoparathyroidism, provided some insight on the issue of moms and low blood calcium. He shared who may be at risk for the disorder, its symptoms and dangers, and the difficulty and risk of managing it with calcium and vitamin D.
