One of the biggest lessons I learned last year: let your misfortunes be your momentum.
There was a lot that happened in my life at the end of last year. I lost my friends. I nearly lost my possessions. A major career opportunity fell through, while others were missed altogether. I made some very costly mistakes. I was severely ill for five weeks straight. And my family handed me a couple of unexpected blows of their own.
.
I guess what they say is true: when it rains it pours.
.
Nevertheless, while all of this was going on, I had to push through each day. I still had responsibilities to fulfill and deadlines to meet. In public, I had to laugh and smile and give the impression that everything in my life was fine when the truth was that I was so down; so discouraged that it was a struggle to be optimistic of things changing for the better. I simply felt that I could not keep going.
.
“It is during our darkest moments that we most focus to see the light.”
~Aristotle
.
Once the chaos stared to subside, I noticed something. The very thing that I was telling myself daily that I could not do, I had been doing all along. With each sunrise and sunset, although I was sinking in the multiplying pile of misfortunes life had dealt to me at once, I was still hanging in there. I certainly bent, but I did not break. I stumbled much, but I did not completely fall.momentum
The more that I reflected on that and I recounted all of the trials I’d been through, I discovered something even more: I had gained strength.momentum
It was then that I remembered that life moves from phase to phase, level to level. Sometimes when there’s a desire to progress to the next phase or level of life, preparation must take place. And in some cases, the preparation can come from the Universe in the form of misfortunes.
.
“But Why??!”
I’m glad you asked 🙂
.
When used properly, misfortunes can be like a refiner’s fire, helping to shape and build the qualities and characteristics needed once into the new phase or level. It could be patience, maturity, discipline humility, etc. In my case, it was strength.
.
So I bundled up all of my misfortunes of 2013 and used them as momentum to catapult me into 2014.
And here I am. 🙂
.
.
I’m sharing to say this: Yes, it’s true that 2014 is a new year, which also means new beginnings . However we have no way of fully knowing all that those ‘new beginnings’ may bring. It may very well be that the year beings misfortunes and rainy days, and moments where the ray of hope seems dim. But when you become open to allowing such moments to propel you into the next phase of your life, you’ll see a shift in your mindset and experience a more positive attitude! When you let your misfortunes be your momentum, you unlock the power that is within you to press forward because your focus shifts from how things are in your life to how things can be.momentum
I challenge you in the New Year to stand strong against any misfortunes that may happen in the months ahead. Commit to using them to your full advantage instead. Use them to help you be formed into all that you are purposed to be. In December when you look back on the months that have passed, you will find yourself surprised at just how far you’ve come!
