King’s Faith Movie Review

*DISCLOSURE: This review was made possible by MamiInnovative Media on behalf of  the film “King’s Faith.” All views and opinions are entirely my own.

I love movies that do more than just entertain, but also strike close to home and prompt self-reflection. This is exactly the case with the film, King’s Faith.

King’s Faith tells the story of Brendan King (Crawford Wilson) who attempts to leave his turbulent gang life behind him, but his past continues to threaten his new-found faith, family, and future. The film prompts audiences to consider questions that many struggle within our world today:Where is God when it hurts? How am I supposed to move on if my past won’t let me? How can I live out my beliefs in God amidst an unbelieving world? Those are just a few questions that King’s Faith surfaces and bravely answers through a story that doesn’t sugarcoat the trials of faith.” – Jenna Lucado Bishop

I had the pleasure of seeing a pre-release screening of the movie and I must tell you, it is very powerful!  The film addresses two areas that I used to struggle with in my own life: the battle of faith, shamefulness of the past, and breaking free from the past to move forward.

The battle of faith is huge and ongoing one. Everyone has experienced times when they are pressing towards a certain goal or a new way of life, and it seems as if everything but the kitchen sink is thrown their way to set them back; and faith of fruition begins to waver. And although it is known that standing firm in faith is the ultimate answer to these types of setbacks, sometimes it can be a very tough thing to do. “King’s Faith” is centered in this issue, and the events that take place in the film shows the impacts of this life struggle from a variety of perspectives.

Another tough life issue is dealing with the past. First, there are those so-called ‘friends and family’ who as you push yourself to change for the better and to grow as a person, will always only see you for the person you were or the things that you did on the past. They will keep reminding you of it, oftentimes with a conversation starting with, “I remember when…” or actions toward you that reflect who you used to be. Such things are done in way to cause embarrassment and shame. The movie tackles this issue head-on and also gives some ways to overcome it.

Owning and accepting the past can also be a challenge. To release from the stigmas and become bold, confident, and faith-filled enough to say, “Yes, that was me—I did those things (or used to do those things) but not anymore. I am a much different person now” is not something that happens overnight or with a snap of the fingers. It truly takes a lot to get to that place (trust me, I know!). And as I noted above, throughout the journey there will always—always be people who do not want you to get there. “King’s Faith” reveals the answers to getting through it and being victorious in this area.

If you or someone you know is struggling with their faith in themselves, forgiving the past, or letting go of the things, people, and actions of the past, seeing this movie is a must. With a wonderful and beautifully written storyline and a stellar cast, “King’s Faith” will draw you in the moment it starts, and keep your undivided attention through the very end. I personally found it to be more than just a movie, but a call-to-action to examine emotions, address issues, and strengthen connection to our spirits, our Higher Power, and the faith that we know lies within us all.
