“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.”

~Vince Lombardi

It’s a given: no one is totally perfect in this life. You’re going to fall, and you’re going to make mistakes. However, the mistakes are not what matter. What’s most important is how you handle yourself afterward.

You don’t run from what you’ve done, and you don’t place blame. Nor do you wait idly for someone else to come pull you up. Instead, you pull yourself up. You take some time to analyze things to discover where you went wrong, and you make note of it so that you don’t make the same mistakes again. You brush yourself off and trust and believe that you can and will get through it. You make a commitment to be a stronger, wiser person as you move forward.

When tough times come as a result of mistakes you’ve made, always remember that the secret to survival is not in finding an easy way out. In fact, that is not ‘survival’ at all, but rather escaping. And there is no strength, growth, or wisdom to be gained in ‘escaping’ life’s trials. Those attributes can only come from actual survival of trials. And to survive, one must go through the full process of rising and recovering after the fall.

Just look at it like this: think of a baby as they their desire arises to walk. What if every time the baby fell down after a few steps or made a misstep, an adult rushes over to them, picks them up, and decides to carry them from then on. Sure, the baby got an ‘easy way out’ of their mishaps in their attempt to walk, but ultimately this does them no good. As the baby grows, the adult will find them much too big and/or heavy to carry, and they will have no choice but to triumph in walking on their own. But now the child’s leg muscles are too weak to hold their bodies up—still at the same strength as when they were an infant because they were never strengthened by the process of learning to walk. The wisdom of how to properly balance their bodies is also missing since it was never learned at the proper time. Now if they fall down or make a misstep, it will be at a much larger cost.

Believe me when I say that you have the power within you to survive anything. Your recovery after a ‘fall’ in life may not happen as fast as you want it to—it may take some time, and there may be some things that you cannot figure out right away. But if you keep the determination within you to rise up and fight through it, you will see the champion in you rise to the occasion. At the end of it all, you’ll find yourself as stepping out of the refiner’s fire: a better version of you than you were before.

It is not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up. Take hold of your power. Rise up, recover, and be empowered to fight on.
