I am a huge lover of jazz music, and one jazz artist that I have always loved as admired is Wayman Tisdale. Not just for his wonderful music, but also his incredible strength, perseverance, and his unwavering positive attitude—even during the worst times of his life.

Unfortunately Wayman lost his two-year battle with cancer in May of 2009. Yet even in his passing, his story is still very inspiring to me. It serves as a reminder to me that keeping a smile on my face and an optimistic mindset in the face of troubling situations is possible. It reminds me of how precious the gifts of life and family are, and that both should be treated with the utmost respect and appreciation.

The legacy that Wayman Tisdale left here on earth shows that we are given many gifts when placed into this world, and it is our responsibility to develop, exercise and operate in every gift because you never know which one will touch the lives of others. It is also evidence that the ways in which we handle life’s rough waters can be a light and example for others to follow when done in a positive way. Wayman proved that if and when we are obedient to our assignments given by the Divine, we activate the power within us to inspire people from all walks of life.
