Trouble Sleeping? Here’s Insomnia Help Tips from the National Sleep Foundation

This is a Type-A Parent paid post to discuss sleep issues, and to share a new insomnia resource from the National Sleep Foundation.

 

Insomnia is not my friend.

It’s something that usually only happens from time to time, But the number of occurrences have skyrocketed since my father’s passing a few months ago. Night after night it takes me hours to fall asleep after I lay down. Some nights, I don’t fall asleep at all.

I have tried many different approaches to remedy my problems with sleep. Everything from warm milk, to adjusting my home thermostat to a cooler setting. I even wear an eye mask. Nothing works.

 .

I know how important sleep is to the body’s overall wellness and everyday function. Sleep in general has a wide range of health benefits, from protection against heart disease and obesity to stronger bones and memory. I am also very aware that most healthy adults need between 7 and 8 hours of complete, uninterrupted sleep each night. But when problems arise in my life or something tragic happens, it because very hard for me to get the sleep that I need.

 .

Since my insomnia has increased, I have started researching different strategies that I can use at home to help. So far, I have discovered some great insomnia help tips from the National Sleep Foundation website. Practices such as breathing exercises, mindfulness, and even meditation techniques can help keep insomnia at bay for me. I also learned that making a few changes in my sleep habits can also make a difference. Being consistent in my bedtime and allowing time in the evenings for winding down can make it easier for me to fall asleep.

Here are some additional insomnia help tips from the National Sleep Foundation:

  • Use a sound machine or a fan to block noise from inside or outside the house, and install darkening blinds for streetlights and morning light.
  • Avoid eating big or spicy meals that can cause discomfort that can make it hard to sleep.
  • Focusing on breathing while lying down to block any mind-consuming thoughts.

Knowing that there are many non-medical treatments that can cure my insomnia makes me feel confident that better days—or should I say nights—are to come. I have been putting these insomnia help tips into action to see if they will help. But if they don’t and lack of sleep continues to interfere with daily activities or productivity, a phone call to my doctor may be the next step. I know that they will be able to get my sleep back on track.
