Increase Your Protein Intake with Milk

Protein intake is important. Protein is the building block of muscle, and without adequate amounts of it, we lose muscle mass and the ability to create muscle. However, most of us don’t get enough protein. Milk is a good source of protein and an easy way to increase your protein intake with every meal.

Adequate Protein Intake – It Doesn’t Happen Often

Did you know that many nutrition experts recommend 25 to 30 grams of protein at every meal, including breakfast, for optimal daily nutrition? Did you also know that most of us don’t get nearly that much for our morning meal? In fact, Americans average about 13 grams of protein for their morning meal. That’s only about half of the recommended amount.

I know this is true in my home. We’re always rushed to get to school or an event, and we rarely get the recommended amount of protein in our morning meal. Milk is helping us get closer, though. One 8 ounce glass of milk has 8 grams of high quality protein, and since we all know that milk pairs well with everything from sausage and eggs to cereal, it’s an easy way to add a delicious kick of protein to our morning meal.

Since my family is always on the go, I’ve started making smoothies to go with the rest of our breakfast in the morning. Pairing a smoothie with some lean sausage and eggs or pancakes allows my family to get in an extra boost of protein for the morning rush and helps power us through the morning. I just make sure I get the blender out the night before. That way when morning rolls around, it’s a quick punch of a button, and we’re good to go.

Protein Intake is Best When it’s Spaced Out

The reason it’s so important to have a good boost of protein in the morning and then a steady amount throughout the day is because piling up the protein at night affects how your body uses it. You need that protein all day, not just at dinner, and its especially important to get adequate protein intake in the hours before noon. Your body has been fasting all night, so it needs that protein!

Another important factor of protein intake is keeping your energy up and and feeling full so you can stay focused. When you get 25 to 30 grams of protein before noon, you feel fuller longer, you have better energy, and you can focus more easily. All of that is so important to be productive.

Increase Your Protein Intake with MilkWe all need more protein in our diets, and adding 8 ounces of milk to every meal can help us reach that goal. When you have an 8 ounce glass of milk with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you’ve already added 24 extra grams of high quality protein to your diet. That’s a nice boost to help you reach adequate protein intake!

Our family is a milk family, so we’re already getting in a ton of protein from milk. We all love it, and it goes great with so many different meals.

It’s true! I have found that when I get more protein, I feel satisfied longer. I forget milk has protein! It would be good in a few of the smoothies I make in the morning, and a lot cheaper to use fresh milk than some of the protein powders out there.
