Joining a health club can motivate you to get in better shape. Whether you are training for a triathlon or just want to drop a few pounds, a gym membership may assist you in achieving fitness goals, but only if you use it.
How to Make the Most of Your Gym Membership
Pick the Right Gym
In order to make the most out of your membership, take the time to evaluate your alternatives so you select a health club that is a good fit for your needs. Carefully consider the location, making sure to choose a gym that is easily accessible. The further a gym is from your home or office the less likely you will be to use it. People with children may want to look for family-friendly options and avoid health clubs that are geared towards single people. Singles may prefer health clubs that don’t have a lot of kids wandering around the locker rooms and hanging out poolside. If certain types of yoga classes or an extensive weight room are important, be sure any gym you pick offers those features.

Mix It Up
One way to become dissatisfied with a gym is if exercising becomes boring and monotonous. Fully utilizing all a gym has to offer can help keep your workouts stimulating and fun. Participating in different classes, checking out the weight room, and going for a swim in the pool are all activities that can mix-up your routine and keep things interesting. Working out different parts of your body rather than doing the same thing over and over can assist in improving overall fitness and even help prevent injuries.

Try It Out in Advance
Before you commit yourself to a year-long membership, it is a good idea to do a trial work-out and spend time in the locker room. Lots of gyms offer complimentary one day passes to prospective members. Purchasing a day pass, if no free ones are provided, can be a smart way to be sure the health club is a good fit for your needs.

Be Prepared to Workout
Wearing proper clothes and shoes when you exercise makes the experience much more enjoyable. If you are not comfortable, you will probably not want to stick around. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on apparel (unless you join a health club where everyone does). Eating something nutritious before working out can boost your energy level. Having a water bottle and staying hydrated is also important.

Joining a health club is an investment of time and money. Keeping these four tips in mind can help you maximize your membership.

These are awesome tips. I actually just canceled my gym membership because I am focusing so hard on getting my black belt later this year and that takes up a lot of time.
Yes to mixing it up!! I get bored really easy if I don’t have different activities.
My Wii is my gym, it lets me mix things up, plus lets me enjoy my privacy! and I prefer my after shower workout at home! 🙂
I agree to try it in advance. My sister recommended a gym to me and I got to test it out first with her!
It’s definitely important to pick the right gym. Some gyms have a much different ambience than others.
You definitley need the right gym for you. Great tips!
These are great tips. I need to find a new gym closer to me. Before I started working from home I would use the gym at work.
My daughter is looking into getting a gym membership. I will have to tell her these great tips!
I think the atmosphere is a very important factor as well. I love how some gyms let you buy a day pass and try it out!
These are very great tips! I am looking for a new good gym here. My old gym back home was a huge part of my life, so now I’m up for picking a new one!
All so true! We love to try new classes at ours. I’ve found a few favorites that I never would have thought about before by mixing it up to keep things fresh.
I don’t have a gym membership. We purchased a lot of home equipment so a gym membership is not needed. Now we just need to use it.
I honestly don’t like gyms. I feel weird because I don’t know how to use the equipment. I rather work out at home or in a class
I have a membership at our Y, but I haven’t been there in about 6 months. I keep wanting to get back, but don’t like the 10-15 minute drive each way. I wish there was someplace I liked that was closer.
These are great tips. I have been thinking of joining a gym this year.
I dont have a membership because I don’t go often enough. I prefer working out at home, but these are great tips.
These are great tips. I don’t use a gym membership, I prefer to workout at home. Being 22 weeks pregnant with three children is a challenge in the physical department alone.
Having a water bottle is important. I remember forgetting mine and having to trot on over to the water fountain. Totally broke my groove!
Such great tips! The wrong gym just becomes a waste….you never go!
It’s like this post was written for me. I’ve had a few gym memberships, and I’ve never gotten everything out of them that I could. Now I just have a treadmill.
These sound like great advice. Will keep in mind when looking.
I do not have a gym membership because I want to wait until I move to another side of town for accessibility. My dad just signed up for his local gym in his area and thats all he talks about now lol!
These are great tips. I also try to take advantage of any personal training offers because I really notice the difference in my workouts.
