When you ask kids what their favorite summer activity is, the answer that you are least likely to receive is gardening.
However, that does not mean that it cannot become their favorite! With a little creativity, kids can be shown that summer gardening projects can be easy, enjoyable, and most of all, fun.

I wanted to get my own kids inspired in the ‘green thumb’ category this summer, so I created a project they could do together. It is very simple and takes very little time.

The first thing I did was thought of a theme that they would enjoy. Since it is summer and my kids love visiting beaches, I decided that their projects would carry a ‘summertime on the beach’ theme. I cleverly named it: Beach Flowers.

I told my kids that they would be making their own beach flowers, and they were a little apprehensive at first. However once they saw the craft items I purchased for the project, they became excited and were ready to get started!

How to make:
After an adult cuts small holes in the bottom of each bucket with a knife, children use the bucket shovels to place potting mix into their bucket at about 1/4 level.

Flowers are then gently placed into the buckets

The Shake n’ Feed Plant Food is added next, using the bucket shovels to gently blend into the soil

More soil is added to top off the bucket, then decals are placed firmly (but gently) into the top soil

Lastly, water the buckets, and….viola! 🙂

The kids had a blast making their very own Beach Flowers! And they now see that gardening do not have to be complicated or hard to do. As the weeks of summer continue, they will be able to watch their very first gardening project grow and blossom, which will hopefully lead to a developed lifelong passion for gardening!
