How Hitting The Snooze Button Affects Sleep Habits (And Tips To Stop It)

Raise your hand if you’re guilty of hitting the snooze button on your alarm in the mornings.

Yeah, me too.

In the moment, it seems like ‘just 5 more minutes’ would make all of the difference in the world in feeling well-rested. There are few times when it actually does. Most times it does not. Most times when I’m finally waking up after hitting the snooze button one, two, or three times, I feel even more tired and sluggish than I did at bedtime the night before.

You, too huh? Well here’s why:

When you hit the snooze alarm, you are disrupting your current stage of sleep. Whether it is the first or the fifth, unfortunately, in many ways, fragmented sleep is worse than no sleep at all.

If you’re like me and the snooze button is your best friend, 🙂 try these steps to help break the cycle of hitting snooze:

Move the alarm clock to a place that’s on the opposite side of the room. When it goes off, you’ll be forced to get out of bed to turn it off, jolting your alertness and (hopefully) making you fully awake.

Set your alarm closer to the time you actually need to get up. Choosing an alarm time that ‘makes room’ for the snooze button to be used a time or two does more harm than good.

Go to bed earlier. It’s a no-brainer, but I know that it can be much easier said than done. Commit yourself to going to bed at a time that would give you at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

Use technology to monitor your actual sleep. Products like the FitBit can track how many times you wake up throughout the night. This information can help you assess your sleep habits and adjust your bedtime schedule to make up for minutes lost overnight.

Take naps. They work: trust me! Something as little as a 10, 15, or 20-minute nap can help with your nighttime sleep and help you to feel more rested in the mornings.

Girl, I’m definitely a fan of naps. I need one right now actually! 🙂 I’ve changed my sleep cycle now that I have kids LOL and go to bed earlier so that I can wake up earlier. What I’ve found is that I have trained my body to wake up before the alarm even goes off. It’s funny when I awake and then about 10 or 15 minutes later, then alarm goes off. I guess I don’t need it for real any longer but have it on most days especially if I have something to do early in the morning…just… Read more »
