Americans love affair with the hot dog extends from backyard barbecues to ballparks during the summer months. Those in the know about top dog status say more than seven billion hot dogs will be eaten by Americans between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Every year, people in the U.S. bite into an average of 60 wieners each.
No matter how you dig your dog, most have a love/hate relationship with this favorite comfort food. We love to eat them, but sometimes hate what’s in them. In a recent national survey, 85% of Americans agree that hot dogs are not very healthy. Most families avoid them because of the fat, sodium and calories. But 83% believe that natural hot dogs are healthy because they’re made from antibiotic and hormone free meat. They believe the cleaner wiener can make all the difference in whether to serve hot dogs to their family and friends.
Nutritionist, Author and Co-Founder of the Healthy Shopper Inc. Andrea Donsky joined me to offer tips to help families enjoy their favorite franks without worrying about what’s in them. She also shared other ways to enjoy a healthier hot dog, including alternate varieties of franks, rolling away from the traditional bun and replacing it with a healthier version and swapping sides for lower calorie choices.
