A Wonderful Way to Give Empowerment and Sustainability This Holiday Season
It’s everyone’s favorite time of year! Holiday season! Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the glam, the gifts, and the cheer and forget about the other big thing that the holiday season is about- giving.
There are millions of people around the world who don’t get to experience any of great things the holiday season brings due to poverty and hunger which are both still big global problems. There are plenty of charities and non-profit organizations that work to feed, clothe, shelter, and even gift the needy but just giving these items only solves the problem temporarily, especially with food. The food will be eaten and hunger will return.
Heifer International, a global non-profit, realized this and came up with a different solution. Instead of simply giving food to the hungry, Heifer International teaches, trains, and empowers people around the world to sustain themselves. Heifer International provides communities with livestock, agricultural training, and tools so that they can learn to sustain themselves. Heifer International gives communities all around the world hope, and new life.

Give Empowerment
.The animals that Heifer provides really brings a boost because of the versatility that they bring. With the animals, communities get food such as milk, eggs, and meat which can all be consumed by the community, or traded/sold at market to bring revenue back to the community. When communities and families begin to bring in a sustainable, more reliable income, it opens more opportunities funding everything from new schools to businesses. Once these communities are established, Heifer encourages them to pass on the gift.
The families and communities that have received the training pass on what they’ve learned and the first female offspring of their livestock to neighboring communities, who pass it on and so on allowing many families who were once in need of blessings to be the givers of blessings.
.
Give Empowerment
.The goal of every Heifer project is to help families and communities reach self-reliance and by 2020, Heifer aims to help 4 million families achieve living incomes. These incomes will allow them to send their children to school, feed themselves adequately, have proper housing, water, hygiene, and many other essential resources.
.
.There are so many ways to contribute to the cause, but the animal gifting program is the most popular. It serves as a great way to teach our kids about the power of giving through the animals as kids love animals and people need animals to become self-sufficient.
In our lives of privilege where we can give our kids the world and it becomes easy for them to think the holidays are only about getting their favorite toys and eating as much food as they can, but Heifer’s animal gifting program is the perfect way to discuss with our kids what the holidays are equally about- giving.
The Holidays mark the season of giving, and now is the perfect time to get the kids involved in giving, in helping people all around the world. We plan to donate an animal this year, and every year from now on. We consider it our way of sharing the blessings of the season. I hope that your family considers doing the same.

This is so awesome! I love programs that allow those in need to sustain themselves instead of just relying on donations. Donations are great, but if you can give people a way to make it in the world, that’s even better. No one wants to rely on someone else forever.
My sister just posted the most heartwarming story called “The White Envelope” on Facebook. The basic premise was the father of a family hated the hustle and bustle associated with Christmas. So one year his wife placed a white envelope on the tree. When the father opened the envelope it described a charitable gift she had made. The tradition continued for the rest of his life. You really must search for it. It’s just perfect. But I would love to do something similar in my own family. This sounds like just the way to do it.
One of my friends is planning on gifting a goat this winter. I think it is a great way to give back and celebrate the real meaning of Christmas.
I love giving a gift that gifts back. I think in this day and age these are so good as gifts!
I love that they give them the ability to take care of themselves. Some gifts fade but that one will outlive them.
There doesn’t seem to be a better gift than giving one the ability to care for themselves. I love this initiative!
This sounds like a really great initiative. We all need to empower each other to live better lives.
This looks like a wonderful organization. It is good to know there are some out there like this.

Heifer International sounds like an amazing organization! I am always looking for new charities to either donate to or volunteer for. This one sounds wonderful, i will be looking more into this to see what i can do to be apart of this.
This sounds amazing. It’s great that they provide training where it’s needed. Such a great initiative!
