Girl Scouts Free Booklets Encourages #HealthyHabits

One of the things that I wish I would have had the chance to do as a child was be a Girl Scout. That is one of the reasons why I registered my two daughters for the program as soon as they were old enough to join. Another reason why it was so important to me that they join Girl Scouts is because of the program’s values for building confidence, courage and character through a wide array of health and wellness activities and events. I knew that such programs would play a great role in shaping my daughters’ lives into adulthood and beyond.

My oldest daughter Rebel earned the Girl Scouts Silver Award for her participation and leadership in various Girl Scouts programs and events.

In their latest quest to promote health in young girls and in partnership with the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation’s Together Counts program, Girl Scouts of America has recently launched the Healthy Habits Journey initiative. The initiative is a special curriculum that includes three Girl Scouts free booklets that are customized by age level (Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors). The booklets can be used by Scouts, volunteers, and families currently in the Girl Scout program, as well as by girls and their families who are not (yet 🙂 ) a part of Girl Scouts but would love to have a guide while on their journey to a more active, healthier lifestyle. Each booklet gives fun and easy-to-follow tips and practices.

Together Counts is a program by the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation that works with schools and communities across the United States to help reduce obesity in children. The program strives to encourage active and healthy living through physical activity and nutrition. The campaign promotes what is called Energy Balance, meaning regularly balancing the calories consumed with the calories burned to achieve better health.

Energy Balance is: 

Energy In: the calories you get from eating and drinking.
Energy Out: the calories you burn from physical activities.

Health and fitness have been part of Girl Scouting since girls ran foot races in 1912-it is no surprise to me that Girl Scouts of America would become a part the Together Counts campaign to help lead the way in continuing to promote increased levels of health and wellness in young girls. I love that the Girl Scouts free booklets encourages #HealthyHabits for girls of all ages. Having two daughters myself, this is a program that I fully support and encourage everyone who has a daughter to get involved in.
