Eddie Murphy has returned to the music scene—this time with a reggae feel and the help of Snoop Lion.
Yes: Eddie Murphy……and Snoop Lion.
.
Before you say, “What??!!” Just hear me out, okay? 😉
.Eddie Murphy New Video Red Light
The collaboration is called, “Red Light” and both the song and the video are doing in 2013 what other songs are not: challenging its listeners to reflect on their actions and behaviors both in public and behind closed doors. It alerts us to how the great leaders and role models of the past are now gone, and it is up to each individual to be positive examples in their homes, in their neighborhoods, and in society as a whole. The lyrics stress that people can no longer place blame or wait on a ‘Calgary’ to come save everyone: if we want better for ourselves, our children and our environments, we are the ones that must make a change for the better.

The song itself is very reminiscent of Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise.” It is one of both a smooth rhythm and melodic beat. While you are bobbing your head, you cannot help but hear the words and sing along to the chorus, while at the same time giving more focus to what Eddie is saying.

It’s so refreshing to see someone with star power like Eddie Murphy speak to the current state of the world not because they were paid to do so, but because it is what’s truly in their heart to sing about. I commend both he and Snoop Lion for “Red Light” – they prove that even in today’s music world, there can still be a positive, socially-conscious message in the music.
