Coca-Cola Project Last Mile Expands In Africa To Improve Availability Of Medicines To Remote Communities

It is hard to believe that in a world filled with constant advancements in health and technology that there are still many major health challenges plaguing our world today. One of the greatest remaining ones lies in the heart of Africa, where half of all people lack access to the medicines they need. Delivering such life-saving medicines the ‘last mile’ from central supply centers through to hard-to-reach remote communities across the continent can be an extremely daunting task.

 .

To help overcome this hurdle, The Coca-Cola Company and its Foundations, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), The Global Fund and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, partnered together to create Project Last Mile. The initiative uses Coca-Cola’s supply chain, distribution, logistics and marketing expertise to help African governments get vital medicines and supplies the “last mile” to remote, hard-to-reach communities.

Launched in 2009, ‘Project Last Mile’ recently announced its expansion to 10 additional African countries over the next five years to improve the availability and access of life-saving medicines and supplies, following projects already underway in the origin countries of Tanzania and Ghana. This expansion includes a commitment of more than $21 million dollars from the partners. The plan will be executed in collaboration with Yale’s Global Health Leadership Institute, Accenture Development Partnerships (ADP) and Global Environment & Technology Foundation (GETF).

 .

“Africa has been a vital part of our business for more than 85 years, and we’re committed to doing our part to help people across Africa live healthier and more active lives,” said Coca-Cola Chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent. “We’re honored to use Coca-Cola’s expertise to improve the distribution of medicine and medical supplies… it’s wonderful to be able to help more people enjoy better access to life-sustaining and life-enhancing medicines.”
