I am proud to be in partnership with Hologic, Inc., a leading global healthcare and diagnostics company with a focus on women’s consumer health, to encourage and empower women to lead healthier lives, everywhere, every day.

Bone health is something is rarely thought of when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. The thought of the condition of bones may not come into mind until much later in life, when bones have already begun to weaken.

Conditions like osteoporosis, a disease that causes low bone density, leads to weaker bones that are more likely to break. The perception that osteoporosis is an ‘old person’s disease’ is a myth. The truth is that conditions relating to bone health can go undetected for a long periods of time.

That is why knowledge is power when it comes to bone health and preventative care. The sooner that lifestyle changes are put into place to prevent osteoporosis and issues regarding bone health, the better. Since the best chance to prevent osteoporosis and bone loss is in young adult years, the time to get educated on the health and lifestyle habits that safeguard bone health is now.

Here are 5 things that you can start doing now to protect your bone health in order to enjoy a good quality of life in the future.

  • Get to know risk factors. Many factors play a role in your risk for osteoporosis, including age, gender, lifestyle, medical history, family history and whether you take any medication or have medical conditions that can lead to bone loss.

.

DID YOU KNOW:

consuming too much protein, sodium, and caffeine; and even rapid weight loss can increase a person’s risk for osteoporosis

.

  • Get active. Doing regular weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise is one of the best ways to protect against osteoporosis and broken bones.

.

  • Get healthy. Calcium, vitamin D, lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats are the key to eating for healthy bones.

  • Get checked. DXA scans—known as bone density scans—play a crucial role in osteoporosis prevention. The painless, 15-minute test will help assess bone health and predict the risk of breaking a bone. Statistics show that older women who had a DXA had a 35% reduction in hip fractures during the following three years.

.

DID YOU KNOW:

A bone density test is the ONLY test that can diagnose osteoporosis before a broken bone occurs.

.

  • Get clean. To maintain good bone health, don’t smoke or have more than two drinks a day.

.

It is not too late to start making bone health a priority. Learn more about bone health, step up your healthy lifestyle practices, and get a bone density screen to assess your current risk for osteoporosis. If you love your bones now, you will protect your future health.

These are great tips. I know osteoporosis and bone health are usually subjects mainly focused on women, but it runs in men and women in my family, and I am worried about it.

I actually didn’t know you could get it earlier on in life. I was one that believed the myth of it being an older person’s issue.

A Bone Density Test is definitely important. Thankfully I have never smoked so that is not a factor, but the cocktails….. LOL 🙂

Bone health is definitely important. I think it’s awesome that you’re raising awareness on this and giving tips. We tend to forget about it but it could really do damage to our health if we don’t take good care of our bones.

Thanks for sharing about bone awareness. Although it may seem like I am too young to care, I know holistic treatments now will help me when I am older.
