My oldest son did not begin driving at age 16 like the typical American high school teenager. My husband and I decided that all of our children should wait until their sophomore year of college to drive since they would be older and (hopefully) wiser and more mentally prepared to take on such a huge responsibility. The time has now come for my son, and he is willing, ready, and able to accept things like driving safety, car insurance, car care, and everything else that comes with owning his own car.

At the beginning of the semester, we advised him that if he kept good grades throughout his freshman year, we would buy the car for him. Not only did he meet his end of the expectation, he exceeded it – even earning a place on the University’s Dean’s List in spite of battling a sudden and severe illness.

Hubby and I will be taking the summer months to search for a new car for our teen son. It is going to be a challenge for us! Since we both own older vehicles, we do not know where to start. There are so many resources out there these days on what to look out for during a test drive. However, one of the very best resources that I have found if the annual Autotrader Must Test Drive Awards. It’s a unique consumer-focused program that shares the top vehicles car shoppers should test drive before they make the commitment to buy.
Reviewing Autotrader’s list of 10 must test drive cars for 2016 was extremely helpful to my husband and I. It took a ton of guess work out of our new car search by showcasing only the cars that offer good value, boasting excellent equipment and good quality for their price. Two of the cars on this year’s Must Test Drive list that we definitely feel would be a good fit for our son are the Honda Civic and the Toyota Prius. We were relieved to know that our son agreed as well! We will be scheduling time for him to test drive both vehicles during the summer months.
